Available. Trusted. Cheaper. Why authorised remanufactured technology is the solution to supply shortages.

We live on a planet with limited resources, however, in our daily lives it’s easy to forget that these resources are not infinite and that significant pressures already exist in our global supply chains.

A create and consume culture is commonplace, and the speed of innovation and desire to have the latest and greatest sees concerns for planetary resource take a back seat.

Recent events have provided a startling glimpse into just what life might be like when these valuable resources start to run out. The blockage at the Suez Canal, for example, put a temporary stop to goods supply, while the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent factory closures in China have also had a significant impact- something that is still being experienced today. This is a warning of what is to come if our habits remain unchanged.

This is especially true of technology, where even major vendors have been experiencing unprecedented supply issues with electronic components. Cisco’s Chairman and CEO Chuck Robbins recently appeared on the BBC to express his concerns over supply issues, which has coincided with an unexpected increase in demand – around 25% higher than anticipated.

Ultimately, it’s the increased dependence on the production and deployment of new technology that is at the root of potential supply issues. Thankfully, there is way to overcome these challenges, and to slow the depletion of finite natural resources – choosing authorised remanufactured technology.

What is authorised remanufactured technology?

We’ve already touched on this in our previous blog discussing e-waste. Remanufactured technology offers the solution to supply chain resiliency by utilising items that already exist.

Almost every major technology vendor, names such as Cisco, Dell, HPE, etc, has a refresh or remanufacture programme. This is where used technology – either returned by customers, end of life products, or overprovisioned stock from suppliers – is fully remanufactured and prepared for use once again. The products are tested by the original manufacturer (Cisco, Dell, HPE) for functionality and possible defects, worn components are replaced, and any data stored is safely deleted. These are then supplied good-as-new with the manufacturers full warranty and associated software licenses. Authorised remanufactured technology really is as good as new.

Crucially, authorised remanufactured technology is not just a temporary, short-term fix. It’s increasingly becoming the go-to approach for many. In fact, a recent IBM survey of IT leaders shows that 58% of respondents plan on using remanufactured IT within their supply chains, especially in mission critical situations. For many, utilising remanufactured IT means speed and agility- teams are already trained on the equipment so integration is seamless and fast.

For years we’ve helped customers evolve their supply chains by designing and deploying solutions built on authorised remanufactured hardware, and we’re proud to have supplied over 600 tonnes of remanufactured technology to date- preventing this 600 tonnes from becoming ewaste by extending it’s life. It means that we can reuse devices and components again and again, extending their life and maximising their value without the need to prematurely and unnecessarily replace with new. It’s the solution to supply chain issues, both today and tomorrow.

What are the benefits?

There are a number of benefits to choosing remanufactured technology, both for your business, and for the planet, but one of the most topical is product availability.

With the ongoing supply issues we’re seeing, including delays with components such as transistors, processors, and semiconductors, new technology simply isn’t available in the quantities required. But with authorised remanufactured, the resources and components required are already available within existing hardware, meaning there are no delays and the technology you need is accessible today.

You can access a more resilient supply chain, with blended solutions built on the technology your people already know and love. No issues with compatibility or additional training for your team.

The availability of the Cisco Catalyst 9000 range is a good example. With Cisco struggling to source the components required for manufacture, availability of new products is scarce, with lead times extending by the day. As a long-standing Cisco Refresh partner, we’ve built extended supply chains to help us access authorised remanufactured CAT9K hardware, good-as-new and ready to be shipped within just a few weeks – a fraction of the expected lead time for new products.

Even better, authorised remanufactured network technology typically costs 20% less than new, a significant saving that helps your stretched IT budget go further.

It’s not just your business that benefits, either. Every piece of technology remanufactured and redeployed, is a piece of technology saved from landfill, and one less drain on finite resources for the creation of a new alternative.

Cistor is here to help

We’re experts in authorised remanufactured technology, and our strong relationships with leading vendors such as Cisco mean that we can source and supply remanufactured technology that simply isn’t available as new. Whether that be due to production issues, or that the product line is no longer available. We can help you access what you need, and map out a refresh plan to help you extend the life of your infrastructure investments.
